Abstract
This study has been performed to overview demographic structure and family life of the Korean elderly. the proportion of the Korean elderly population aged 60 or over became more than 10 percent of the total population in Korea in 1990. The
increase of
general life expectancy resulted in the increase of proportion of the elderly living with spouse.
For example, rate of the married elderly(60+) was 50.9% in 1960, but became 54.9% in 1980.
In addition, proportion of extended family tremendously decreased from 27.2% in 1965 to 17.2% of overall households in 1980.
Contrary to increasing number of the elderly population, the number of elderly care facilities was extremely limited and governmental fanancial support for senior citizen centers was almost nill.
Overall, this study proposes that public awareness and governmental support program be strongly focused on the growing number of elderly in nee.
